In the Northern Hemisphere Mabon occurs this year astrologically on September 22, this Sunday. As opposed to Samhain and Yule for example, the Equinox celebrations can be multi-day celebrations connected to planting in the Spring and harvesting in the Fall. In addition to the harvest itself, the preparation of preserving the last of the fruits and grains for winter storage takes place. So you can create a series of activities to honor this part of the year.
Mabon is a time when our hours of daylight wane and it takes heat and memories with it. It is time for us to create new balance in our lives. Use this time to eliminate obstacles both inner and outer. Just as our spiritual ancestors used the equinox to take account of their harvest and prepare for the winter, we call on that energy to correct the balance in our immediate universe.
I love to celebrate Sabbats with cooking feasts and sharing with friends and family. There is some thought that what should make the sabbats different from the esbats is food. I will always follow any train of thought that wants to involve food! I always separated sabbats from esbats (full moons) with the fact that sabbats are mostly celebrations and esbats are when we do magical work. I will leave this to you to decide.
As the days get shorter and the earth’s energy drifts into darkness, try to take some time to review and decide what you want to change about your inner climate. Less worry, more positive outlook, better relationships, more community involvement or bringing more of your spirituality into your daily life. Pick a ritual or spell from your collection that speaks to you at this time of the year and explore!
Blessed Mabon.
